And like those slim cabinet TV’s we hope “Green Boating” moves quickly from trend to a recognized standard. If you currently own a boat small changes such as using eco-friendly cleaning products and bottom paints can go a long way if we all followed suit. If you buy a production boat then you are limited, but if you have the chance to have one built then you can specify energy efficient equipment, LED lighting and fuel efficient engines. But what about the actual yacht construction and it’s impact on the environment? We’ll focus on one aspect, resin infusion.

Symbol Yachts factory production floorKnown more technically as VARTM (vacuum assisted resin transfer molding) or as SCRIMP (Seemann Composites Resin Infusion Molding Process), the patented system by TPI Technology, resin infusion is a method that utilizes a vacuum to pull liquid resin into a dry lay-up (fiber reinforcements and/or core materials). The vacuum assistance provides for a consistent wet-out of the dry reinforcement fabrics which results in a superior finished product with a very low void content (bubbles aka blisters!). Resin infusion also offers superior fiber to resin ratios over traditional hand lay up methods generally resulting in a lighter, stronger finished product containing more fiber reinforcement and less resin content. Attention to resin content becomes extremely important in large & performance vessels focused on weight management.Symbol working on the 75 Flushdeck

So how does resin infusion have a positive impact on the environment? For starters there is less wasted resin as the process allows for excess or unused resin to be collected. The physical contact with resins and epoxies is reduced (limited to the initial mixing) therefore reducing the health issues associated with these materials. Astonishingly there are almost zero VOC (volatile organic carbons) emissions since the liquid resin remains inside the vacuum bag until the cure time is satisfied. This last point undeniably provides a safer work environment for employees while taking mother nature into consideration as well. Lastly, lighter vessels need smaller engines which burn less fuel. Save Mother Earth and your wallet- now that’s a trend that will stick!Symbol working on the 75 Flushdeck

SCRIMP technology requires builders interested in adopting this advanced construction method to undergo a thorough evaluation & licensing process. Ta Chou (“TC”) Shipyard, well known for their longevity & craftsmanship in the Taiwan boat building industry, has been a registered SCRIMP license holder & skilled practitioner since 1999. There is no shortage of generational experience at TC Shipyard with 88 years devoted toward building sail boats, power boats, mega yachts and military patrol boats. Lucid Yacht Group is proud to introduce Miura Yachts & Aquabay ,by TC Shipyard, to U.S. waters. Both the 70 Express and 76 Flybridge are capable of speeds in excess of 40kts through the use of SCRIMP technology and classified to meet ABS, DNV or RINA upon request.
